Jug Bay Spring Action 3/8/2026

12 Mar 2026 7:27 PM | Anonymous

First week of March and a couple weeks from the thaw we saw a weekend of 80 degrees finally. Decided to try something different again and head down to Jug Bay and look for some perch. Loaded up the Kayak and some light tackle consisting of ned rigs, small ratl-traps, maps,  and spinner baits and headed down to catch the high tide at noon.

DNR recently redid Jacksons Landing, it's a real nice concrete boat ramp now with a separate kayak launch and a new fishing pier.  About a half dozen fisherman were already there fishing off the pier and catching steady fish the entire time I'm dinking with the kayak. One guy even caught a small juvie Striped Bass.

Start padding out straight from the ramp and immediately find 1 foot of water.  Jug Bay is shallow, real shallow.  If you're on a boat bring charts and go slow. Water was warm though, 55. I found myself pushing along the bottom with my paddle more often than I thought and eventually moved back into the channel and its 5-10 feet of water.

Paddled south and trolled a little along the way without much luck. Talked a bit with another Kayak angler who was looking for Catfish.  Found a 30 foot hole and stopped to switch lures from the rooster tail and got a hit on the drop.  Nice 18" catfish.  The wind was blowing pretty good and by the time I got him in the boat I was off the hole to the East and in 5 feet of water. Fished up the bay from there in shallow, saw lots of schools on the fish finder but they weren't biting.

Decided to go back to the hole and caught another on the first cast. With the wind I could only get 2 casts before moving back but I was pulling catfish about every 3 drifts. A few hours of that and decided to head back in, padding against the wind.

While loading up the Kayak, noticed a new group of guys at the fishing pier and they were still steadily pulling in fish. Looked like mostly catfish and it was a consistent bite about an hour before sunset.

That all said, definitely recommend Jug Bay for a good local fishing spot.  Kayaking was good, wouldn't want to take a boat in there, but honestly a orange bucket and some bait on the pier will likely get you some fish based on what I saw.
